Where do we want to be?
“If you don't know where you're going, any road will
do..” Like me, you will probably have heard this quotation
many times before. But how many of us really do have a
short, medium and long term business plan?
For small businesses, just the words 'Business & Strategy Planning' can fill our minds with fear. We imagine Accountants, Solicitors, Bank Managers and, of course, enormous costs. It will be a great relief then to know it doesn't have to be so!
Let's go back to my trip to Edinburgh. From our audit, we now know that I am in Maidenhead in Berkshire. Our business and strategy plan will now review my options for getting to Scotland – fly, drive, catch a train or even cycle. It will decide which method is best to use, how much it will cost and when I will need to pay based on the time-frame of when I want to get there.
So that covers the business plan (get to Edinburgh), the strategic time-frame (when do I want to be there), investment plan (how much it will cost) and cash flow analysis (when do I need to pay).
Of course this is an over simplification but its purpose is to de-mystify this important aspect of running a business.
